Amazing Malaysian by Norman Musa (£20)
I love Malaysian food – from roti canai, to aromatic curries, everything is incredible! And let’s not forget my love for Malaysian desserts. A couple of posts ago, I blogged about a supper club held at Ekachai, by a Malaysian chef called Norman Musa. He has recently published his second recipe book which I was thrilled to receive, and am excited to tell you all about.
Amazing Malaysian allows you to embark on a journey not just of Malaysian cuisine, but on a journey of Chef Norman Musa himself. Throughout the book, there are small extracts of what the recipes mean to the chef, where he learnt them, whom he learnt them from and how he created them. I love this personal touch as it turns the book in to a story and allows you to learn more about the chef and Malaysia itself.
Recipes: There are over a hundred recipes to choose from, all of which are simple and the majority of which are made up of ingredients that can easily be found in any supermarket. I personally love the soy chicken stir-fry…
This recipe is so quick and easy and only has 4 steps! I love spicy food but with no chilli in the recipe I was a bit worried this dish would lack flavour. I needn’t have worried, as this was delicious and packed with flavour from the soy sauce and ginger. It was served with rice, but you could easily serve this with noodles too.
Other recipes I love: Aromatic chicken curry, flat noodles with prawns and the vegetable fried rice.
Photography: The images in this book are beautiful, clean and slightly rustic. I love that there are also images of every day people, and the streets of Malaysia, adding to the chef’s more personal touch to his book.
Suitable for: You don’t need to be a contestant on MasterChef to cook these dishes! They are simple and delicious … all you need is your appetite and a love for Malaysian food!
