If you are following me on Instagram, you’ll know that I recently got back from a 3-week holiday, where I ate a LOT. I had planned to go on a post holiday diet, only to be struck by the London Halal Food Festival as soon as I got home. “It’s okay”, I said to myself. “Diet starts tomorrow!” Then Halal Gems suggested brunch a few days later at The Great Chase Restaurant. “It’s okay”, I said to myself … “they probably have eggs and avo toast – I’ll get that!” Oh, but then I had a look at the menu and saw that this restaurant serves burgers for brunch. “It’s okay”, I said to myself. “One more burger won’t do any harm!” And that, ladies and gentleman… is why I never ever succeed in dieting!
The Great Chase Restaurant is a relatively new, fully halal, alcohol free, modern British restaurant situated in Islington. After chatting to the lovely owner Mabruk, he told us that they source all their products locally and use high quality ingredients! Having scanned the menu before I came, I knew exactly what I wanted…
BUTTERMILK FRIED CHICKEN BURGER WITH FRIES – £12
The chicken burger was crunchy on the outside and juicy on the inside… just how I like it! It was topped with spicy miso and fermented cabbage slaw giving it a slight tang, which was unique and delicious. I loved it and even put it in my list of top 10 halal burgers to try in London!
BEEF BURGER WITH FRIES – £12.50
A 4oz beef patty, brisket (yum), smoked cheddar, baby gem, gherkins and house bbq sauce!
A decent burger… however I personally prefer the patty to be more loosely packed, allowing the burger to be more succulent and juicy. Having said this, the addition of beef brisket was nice and the house bbq sauce, which took a whopping seven years to create, was so delicious and great for dunking my fries in.
PANCAKES – £15
It’s not every day you get to have banana pancakes doused in maple gravy and topped with crispy duck leg and glazed apricots! The pancakes were dense and fluffy and the maple gravy had just the right amount of sweetness. When combined with the duck, it made for the perfect concoction. If I’m being picky, I think the duck could have been slightly crispier but nevertheless it was a dish like no other!
CHOCOLATE MOUSSE – £6.50
We were super full but Zohra and Ruman from Halal Gems were raving about how good the chocolate mousse is at The Great Chase so we decided to share one! They were right; it was amazing. Airy but creamy and beautifully served with strawberries and hazelnuts. Feeling full and satisfied, we ended our lovely brunch with tea and non-alcoholic drinks!
The bill amounted to £15 each for what I thought was a great meal. The beef burger wasn’t particularly amazing but I thoroughly enjoyed everything else and it’s definitely one of my new favourite brunch spots in London. I can’t wait to return to try their dinner menu… I hear they do a mean steak!
