Thursdays at uni are quite horrible. I spend my morning in the dissecting room handling cadavers, have a quick lunch break and then head off to labs for 4 hours, *sigh*. When the day ends, all I want to do is chill out and of course, EAT. So one Thursday, after labs, my friend K and I headed to Tagine in Balham, tired, hungry and ready to feast!
Tagine’s interior is beautiful, and my friend K and I were mesmerised by the cute details of the restaurant, like their lights….
And their colourful cushions…
On to the food!
Hummus (£5.50)
Your standard, creamy hummus served with pita bread. I’ve had better hummus and wasn’t overly impressed.
Zaalouk (£6.00)
This dish consists of aubergines cooked with tomato sauce, parsley, fresh coriander and olive oil. My friend ordered this as she’s an aubergine lover, (unlike me) and she really enjoyed it!
Zizou Grill (£15.00)
For my main, I opted for the mixed grill YAS. Lamb and chicken skewers served with couscous or rice. I asked for mine to come with rice and, unfortunately, they gave me couscous instead, but I was too hungry to complain so I kept it.
The chicken was average and I thought some of the lamb was too chewy and fatty. I did, however, love the Merguez sausage, which was packed with flavour.
LAMB BARKOUK TAGINE (£15.00)
K opted for this dish – my favourite out of the two (sad times for me). The lamb was beautifully cooked so that it was soft and melted in your mouth!
I liked the spices of the lamb, which complemented the sweetness of the pear and prunes well. A sprinkle of almonds was also added to the top, which added a nice crunch to the dish.
Tagine serves authentic Moroccan food in a nice location. I think the dishes are a bit hit and miss, and not really worth the price. But if you’re looking for a cool place for a birthday dinner, somewhere to have a girly night or a restaurant to take good pictures in 😉 , then Tagine is a good option.
