2017 is coming to an end and I can’t help but hope that I’ll be a bit more healthy in the New Year. My (pretend) January diet is coming soon, and so it’s absolutely necessary to make the most of December… am I right? I decided to end the year with an epic and calorific meal at Jamavar with my parents, two evenings ago. It’s had rave reviews and been on my restaurant wish list ever since it opened! With dissertation writing in the way, I never got a chance to visit and I actually forgot about it for a while… until it earned its first Michelin star this October!
Jamavar is an Indian establishment led by chef Rohit Ghai. The restaurant is located on Mount St in Mayfair and has a beautiful, cosy and rich interior. Take a look for yourself…
WHAT WE ORDERED:
GANJAN | £6
I ordered a fresh lemongrass, passion fruit, orange and pineapple mocktail. For £6, I had hoped for more as it was nothing out of the ordinary.
DAKSHINI JHEENGA | £22
Big, juicy, tiger prawns were first to arrive! They were really succulent and packed with flavour from Jamavar’s southern spices. The prawns were great on their own, but can be dipped into an accompanying peanut and curry leaf chutney.
MALAI STONE BASS TIKKA | £20
The malai stone bass tikka is absolutely incredible and is cooked to perfection. The fish was beautifully tender and juicy and it packs in a wonderful amount of spice as well as a slight smokiness. It is served with an amazing avocado chutney.
You cannot come to Jamavar without ordering this… it was my favourite dish of the night!
ADRAKI LAMB CHOPS | £24
Three lamb chops arrived to our table, priced at a hefty £8 per chop. The chops give off a lovely smoky flavour straight from the tandoor! The meat was beautifully juicy and pink inside and I have to say, it’s one of the best lamb chops I’ve had!
OLD DELHI BUTTER CHICKEN | £20
For mains we opted for Jamavar’s butter chicken. Having just had the most amazing starters, this dish was a little underwhelming. The curry was creamy and the chicken was tender, however I wasn’t a fan of the balance of flavours. It was a bit too sweet for my liking and I would’ve preferred more spice.
We ordered the butter chicken with fluffy basmati rice.
DHUNGAR DAAL | £7
I’m more of a meat eater and I don’t usually order daal at restaurants. My mum however, loves daal and I was actually grateful she picked this from the menu.
A bowl of char-smoked, tempered yellow lentils with ginger and tomato arrived to our table. To my surprise, I preferred the dal to the butter chicken. It was really heartwarming, tasty and great for dunking our fresh naan into. Thanks Mum!
MANGO RASMALAI | £8
My parents opted for a mango rasmalai, consisting of a rasgulla in a creamy alphonso mango sauce, topped with mango cream, a mixed berry chutney and a sugar shard upon a wheat biscuit base. It was nice and refreshing, but I felt that the flavour of the mango could have been a bit sharper.
CHILLI CHIKKI LAVA CHOCOLATE FONDANT | £9
I went for Jamavar’s indulgent chocolate fondant which was a winner!! It was super rich and creamy, and served with caramelised pecans and cinnamon kulfi. The cinnamon kulfi was really sharp and hit the throat in a way that was amazing and made you want more.
The only caveat is that is that the chocolate inside was not as runny as I had hoped, but nevertheless it was still a beautiful dessert that I really enjoyed.
Overall the bill amounted to just over £50pp. Jamavar is definitely pricey, but it is worth the splurge for a special occasion! Almost everything we ordered was amazing and it’s easy to see how they were able to earn a Michelin star within their first year of opening. The service was very attentive and we had a great dining experience. Jamavar is for sure one of the best restaurants I have dined at in 2017 and I hope I can revisit soon!
P.S. Have you read my review of Jamavar’s sister restaurant – Bombay Bustle? Read about it here.

Hi, love your blogs, quick question, certain people in my family have strict diets I’m terms of their halal and we’d love to dine in the palace you do. Therefore, would it be possible you can start finding out where the meat/chicken etc is actually is from e.g stunned, non stunned, meat suppliers etc. Just for their peace of mind. A ma-housive jazakallahu khayrun. Stay blessed.
