A few weeks ago, after both mine and A‘s exams were finally over, it was the latter’s turn to pick a restaurant to go to.
One craving, which is always typical post exam-season (as all you fellow students can vouch for), had to be fulfilled: fried chicken.
Luckily, Ma’Plucker offered exactly what we longed for and so we both ventured out to Soho, armed with our appetites.
Buttermilk Fried Chicken with Maple Waffle (£7.00)
I can already sense that some of you cringed as you read “fried chicken with waffle” but, I assure you it’s one of those combinations that just works, like apples and peanut butter – try it before you judge me!!!
Both A and I have already had chicken and waffle options at Stax Diner and BIRD but they don’t come close to Ma’Plucker’s attempt. The batter was crisp, the chicken thigh was tender and the sweetness of the maple waffle was just right. Ma’Plucker’s waffle was already coated with an even distribution of maple syrup and both the waffle and the chicken worked amazingly with the chipotle chilli sauce that we selected. We would definitely recommend this combination of Ma’Plucker’s ‘3 way chicken’ options.
Pulled Chicken Crispy Taco Basket (£7.95)
Pulled chicken bundled with guacamole, salsa and sour cream, in a crispy taco basket. Now this was a combination that wasn’t as successful for Ma’Plucker. The pulled chicken was unfortunately quite dry and didn’t taste fresh. Both A and I were fighting over the chicken and waffle after we tried the pulled chicken taco basket, as it was extremely underwhelming.
Ma’Plucker is a good place for a quick and relatively cheap meal in London if you opt for the chicken and waffle, which is the only thing we would recommend from what we tried. Ma’Plucker offers a lot of interesting takes on a simple thing like fried chicken and I would say it’s worth the trip, but only if you’re in the area.
