Malaysia Kitchen Spring Market

I promise you that there’s more to my revision breaks than just eating food but today I jumped on the tube towards South Bank and treated myself to a day at the Malaysia Kitchen Spring Market.
Every year, South Bank transforms into a mini food market for a weekend, where a dozen or so Malaysian restauranteurs and vendors show off their food in stalls, beside the Thames.

You can check out a full list of all the restaurants on-show here. The Spring Market also features live music and a live kitchen with lots of demonstrations by award-winning chef, Norman Musa.

This year, Malaysia Kitchen Spring Market is on  Saturday 2nd May and Sunday 3rd May between 10:00-19:00.

I didn’t manage to try everything but here is my personal top 5 out of everything on offer, at the Malaysia Kitchen Spring Market:

1. Mango and Passionfruit Ripple Ice cream (£2.00) – Yee Kwan

This ice cream was so delicious I’m contemplating going again tomorrow just for another couple of scoops. You can really tell that the ice cream is of high quality and at first I was disappointed that Yee Kwan’s double award-winning flavour, Black Sesame Seed, wasn’t available, but I can’t have any regrets about that after tasting the Mango and Passionfruit flavour. Highly recommended!
 
2. Kuay Teow Goreng (£5.00) – Tukdin

Before I visited the ice cream stall this was my highlight of the day. Tukdin which offers a completely halal menu at their restaurant, served up a really delicious noodle dish. There was so many flavours infused into this traditional Malay dish with prawns, spices, small traces of fried egg, and vegetables all working together perfectly.
 
3. Chicken Satay (£5.00) – Puji Puji

I couldn’t pass up visiting Puji Puji(great name! XD),  who are well known for their Chicken Satay. The Satay portion was served with a lovely Peanut sauce. They really did nail the sauce something that has usually ruined the Satay at other places for me.
 
4. Vegetable Spring Rolls (£3.00) – Rasa Sayang

Next up on the list were some vegetable spring rolls! Perfectly crisp on the outside and filled with some yummy vegetables. The filling was not soggy and was really delicious. It could have had a little more flavour but for the price of £3 for 4, these were definitely a hit!
 
5. Original Apam Balik (£4.00)- The Malaysian Pancake Co.

All the Malaysian people at the event were after these traditional pancakes and I had to join them in the queue to see what the fuss was about! I would probably go for American pancakes if I had the choice between the two but it was nice to try the Malaysian take on them! The ‘original’ option had crushed peanuts and sweetcorn folded inside but you can also get the nutella option if you’re feeling less brave.

 
I really recommend you visit the Malaysia Kitchen Spring Market before it ends for another year, it could make a great day out in the heart of London for some authentic and more importantly delicious Malaysian food.
